On 8 July 2024, the Greater Amman Municipality (GAM), in Jordan, launched the trial version of the innovative Amman is Listening platform in partnership with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and financial support from the Global Mayors Challenge, marking a significant step towards enhancing citizen engagement and urban resilience.
Amman is Listening is designed as an interactive digital tool to provide essential information, maps, and data to both city residents and visitors, so to create greater awareness and bonds in the communities, and better inform the city’s response to crises. It allows users to convey their ideas and opinions to municipal officials, improving service delivery and integrating meaningful feedback into the city development plans.

Mayor Yousef Al Shawarbeh underscored the platform’s alignment with GAM’s strategic goals of digital transformation and utilizing technology to improve urban services and resident welfare. He emphasized its role within the municipality’s comprehensive five-year strategy and national plan for electronic transformation, closely tied to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals.

Majida Assaf, UNDP Deputy Resident Representative in Jordan, highlighted the platform’s potential to foster social cohesion, inclusive communities, and sustainable urban development. “This initiative positions Amman as a model green city, promoting environmental management and citizen participation in development efforts”, Assaf noted.
The platform represents a significant leap towards enhancing Amman’s resilience and reputation as a forward-thinking, environmentally sustainable city, and prepared to respond to challenges through inclusive citizen engagement and technological innovation.
