UNDP SDG Local Action will develop a webinar to launch the new guideline, “Transforming the city of Hermosillo (Mexico): the Biciclando recycling project”, showcasing how an intermediate Mexican city turned two pressing urban challenges—waste mismanagement and women’s economic exclusion—into an opportunity for circular economy and gender equality.

The Biciclando model provides training for women recyclers, known as bicicladoras, to collect and process recyclable waste using electric bicycles and a Circular Economy Centre. This innovative system reduces carbon emissions, increases recycling rates, and creates dignified jobs for women traditionally excluded from formal employment.
The guideline offers a step-by-step methodology for local governments worldwide, capturing Hermosillo’s lessons learned in designing collection routes, training operators, ensuring financial sustainability, and integrating gender equity in waste management.
