Brazzaville and Kinshasa, the capital cities of the Republic of Congo and the Democratic Republic of Congo have both been jointly designated African Capitals of Culture for the years 2024 and 2025. The African Capitals of Culture program is carried out by UCLG Africa, the main African city associations. They are to celebrate the artistic, cultural, and creative excellence of the African continent, to lead a reflection on the place of culture and the arts in public policy, and to encourage the valorization of the cultural and creative industry as a lever for development.
This nomination is valid for a year and promises a dynamic cultural exchange between the two closest cities in the world.
The first event is scheduled for January 24, 2024, in Brazzaville, marking the World Day of African and Afro-descendant Culture which will celebrate the richness and diversity of the cultural heritage shared between the two sister cities.
