On 20 February 2025, UNDP released a new document titled “Strengthening local food production by improving market access. A case study of the city of Butuan, Philippines” showcasing how Butuan has successfully increase local food production and consumption. The guidelines were presented during a webinar, accessible HERE.
It documents the initiative implemented by the city of Butuan, one of the 2021 Mayors Challenge winners.
The city of Butuan is targeting the lower level of fresh food produce through the following actions:
- AgriBloom: provides farmers with financial assistance, farming supplies, and training in digital tools, ensuring access to production facilities and demand-driven practices.
- AgriMart: supports small vendors, e-stores, and market outlets to create a stable supply chain and predictable retail pricing.
- AgriHub: a digital platform that connects farmers with buyers, ensuring fair pricing, quality control, and efficient transactions.
- AgriBOOST Comms: deploys marketing strategies to engage stakeholders, including farmers, private sector actors, and community groups, and to raise awareness and drive participation.
The project has already increased local vegetable production, stabilized prices, and improved farmer incomes, while digital innovations have transformed trade practices and market efficiency.
This publication serves as both a critical analysis and a practical toolkit for policymakers and agricultural stakeholders. It underscores how investing in local food systems and market access not only strengthens farmer livelihoods but also enhances food security, fosters economic resilience, and promotes sustainable urban development.
