CIRCULAR ECONOMY CENTER IN HERMOSILLO, MEXICO

On 5 September 2024, Hermosillo Municipality in Mexico took a key step toward sustainability with the launch of the Circular Economy Center (CEC) in their district of Modelo. This initiative is part of the first phase of the Biciclando project, supported by the Global Mayors Challenge.

The CEC serves as a hub for recycling, education, and community engagement, operating on weekdays and inviting residents to drop off materials such as plastic, paper, cardboard, and aluminum. Local residents, schools, and organizations interested in sustainability, as well as general volunteers, are the main target groups to be involved.

Future plans include a green entrepreneurship hub, a multipurpose hall, a community urban garden, and a dog park. These additions will further promote innovation and environmental awareness within the community.

Beyond recycling, the center will offer educational programs on proper waste separation and disposal, and will host interactive events, practical workshops, talks, and capacity-building sessions on environmental-related topics.

Residents will learn about climate change and how individual actions contribute to environmental preservation. Entrepreneurs and small businesses will find a platform to develop and share green initiatives, creating opportunities for local economic growth. The center is also expected to generate job opportunities, particularly for women, through its various operations, helping to strengthen the local economy.

The center aligns with the city’s vision of promoting social cohesion, empowering residents, and building a circular economy model to inspire other local governments.
