CEMR LAUNCHES REPORT ON LOCAL GOVERNMENTS’ ROLE IN GREEN TRANSITION

On 7 October 2024, the Council of European Municipalities and Regions (CEMR) released the report Local Green Transition: Prospects for an Inclusive and Competitive Deal, focusing on how local and regional governments (LRGs) are implementing the European Green Deal to achieve climate neutrality by 2050.

The report, based on inputs from over 300 LRGs, highlights that 92% of LRGs are familiar with the decarbonization legislation affecting their regions, but only a third feel prepared to implement necessary legislation. While many have seen benefits like job creation and better air quality, barriers such as funding and regulatory complexity persist.

Key recommendations for EU and national policymakers include tailoring the Green Deal to local needs, simplifying funding access, and promoting cross-border cooperation.

CEMR President, Gunn Marit Helgesen, emphasized that municipalities and regions are vital to Europe’s green transition through projects in renewable energy and sustainable infrastructure.

This report serves as a guide for local governments to foster economic growth while addressing climate challenges.
