The #FreetownTheTreeTown project is fighting deforestation while preventing casualties created by landslides and floods. Since 2020, the city has planted one million trees, to reach 5 million before 2030. The city is now working to access the carbon market with an estimated 100.000 tons CO2 sequestration potential. The funds obtained by the process will contribute to maintaining the project’s long-term sustainability and community involvement, and increasing green spaces.
Cordoba province is pioneering sustainable finance in Argentina, by launching a pilot voluntary carbon market in 2022. This system allowed companies to offset their carbon emissions by buying Verified Carbon Units (VCUs). These VCUs were auctioned electronically by the government, and the transactions were tracked using blockchain to ensure transparency. The initiative promoted investment in clean energy, linking local efforts with international environmental standards. In 2024, the province of Cordoba has been expanding this program and connecting with global markets like California’s to further boost emission reductions.
Join this webinar to gain insights into the lessons learned from Freetown city and Cordoba province, providing practical knowledge that can inspire other cities and regions to engage with carbon markets.
