City of Kigali launches final report on Rainwater harvesting and smart waste management project

The City of Kigali has released the Monitoring and Evaluation final report of its Rainwater harvesting and smart waste management project, developed under the Global Mayors Challenge in partnership with the UNDP SDG Local Action.

Implemented between 2022 and 2025, the initiative improved living conditions for 1,354 households in the Busanza and Mpazi Resettlement sites by installing two rainwater reservoirs and seven smart waste management stations. The project achieved an average 23–24% reduction in water bills and reached near-universal adoption of waste segregation, improving sanitation and environmental health.

The report highlights Kigali’s innovative, community-driven approach to water and sanitation management, offering a replicable model for sustainable urban development and progress toward the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
