Local Governments for Sustainability (ICLEI) and the city of Bonn have joined forces to organize Daring Cities 2024. This action oriented initiative aims to accelerate exemplary local climate action and empower cities to become leaders in sustainability and resilience.

Supported by major contributions from the city of Bonn, the Federal State of North Rhine-Westphalia (NRW), the Foundation for International Dialogue of the Savings Bank in Bonn, and the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) of Germany, Daring Cities 2024 seeks to address the challenges of climate emergency, biodiversity loss, and urban resilience.

At the heart of Daring Cities is the recognition of cities’ pivotal role in combating climate change. While national governments set overarching policies, cities wield significant control over key areas like transportation, energy, and waste management. This initiative provides a platform for local governments, along with stakeholders from businesses, civil society organizations, and research institutions, to collaborate on innovative solutions and share best practices.

Building on the success of previous years, Daring Cities 2024 will focus on the theme of collective action in response to the climate emergency. Through dialogues, workshops, and high-level roundtables, participants will explore ways to bridge gaps between national and subnational climate actions. The event will also spotlight the Coalition for High Ambition Multilevel Partnerships (CHAMP) initiative for Climate Action, aiming to enhance collaboration across government levels and sectors.

The framework of Daring Cities 2024 is anchored in three key cornerstones: Reflect, Exchange, and Advocate. “Reflect” encourages introspection on past climate actions, particularly those from UNFCCC COP28, to ensure a seamless transition into current initiatives. “Exchange” fosters dialogue and knowledge-sharing among stakeholders, emphasizing multilevel collaboration. “Advocate” empowers representatives to amplify the event’s key messages, influencing broader arenas including major international environmental conferences and UNFCCC COP29.
