In a significant step forward for urban climate action, ninety-seven leading scientists and urban practitioners from five continents have been chosen by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) to contribute to the upcoming Special Report on Climate Change and Cities (SR-Cities), set for release in March 2027.
The SR-Cities will explore the urgent climate challenges facing cities and offer practical, region-specific solutions for sustainable urban development. This collaboration between scientists and urban experts marks the first time that such a report has been co-created from the outset, combining cutting-edge research with real-world urban experience.
Notable experts selected for key roles include Prof. Jose Antonio Puppim de Oliveira (Brazil), who will serve as Coordinating Lead Author for the chapter on facilitating and accelerating change; Prof. Dr. Felix Creutzig (Germany), a Lead Author focusing on solutions by city types and regions; and Risto Veivo (Finland), who will join Creutzig as Lead Author on the same chapter.

ICLEI, an organization committed to advancing urban climate action, has long supported the IPCC in highlighting the role of cities in addressing climate change. The SR-Cities report will offer vital insights for policymakers and urban leaders around the globe, helping cities develop strategies to mitigate climate risks and embrace sustainability.
This report will help shape global climate policy, especially as cities continue to be key players in the fight against climate change.
