REDUCING FOOD WASTE: DIGITAL TOOLS FOR LOCAL GOVERNMENTS

We have selected apps and digital tools that local governments are using to reduce food waste. Take a look!
Food security is a priority for many local and regional governments. While food production is rarely within their responsibility, preventing food waste is something they can do.
Over the past years, a number of digital tools have been developed in this area. This guideline aims to analyze selected apps and tools for food waste management and present useful approaches for different local contexts.
Here, we present various digital platforms, grouped into five categories
1. Reducing surplus: tools preventing food from going bad
2. Surplus redistribution: giving safe food a second life by connecting consumers directly
3. Logistics and workflow: improving logistics for the food supply and distribution chains
4. Food waste treatment: improving food waste disposal to reduce its environmental impact
5. Accessing organic food: working to connect farmers with urban consumers and to expand organic urban food
6. Creating awareness to bring people along: increasing citizens’ awareness of the importance of reducing food waste, home by home
