GREEN JOBS IN C40 CITIES

C40 Cities and the Circle Economy Foundation have released an analysis about green jobs in major cities, highlighting the benefits of local-level climate investments. The study shows that nearly 16 million jobs currently support the transition to a green economy across 74 cities worldwide, encompassing both direct and indirect green jobs.

Notable sectors driving green jobs include public transport, electricity, construction, and waste management, where local governments are crucial in supporting them through regulation, standards, and cooperation. Nearly 30% of the jobs in the electricity and transport sectors are currently green, and 25% in the buildings and construction sectors.

The study indicates that green investments make urban programs expand, drive job creation, and boost demand in supplier industries. It also shows that green and just recovery scenarios could generate, on average, three times more jobs than high-carbon scenarios.

C40 Executive Director, Mark Watts, emphasized the direct benefits of city climate action, noting that these green jobs not only cut emissions but also improve local economies across diverse sectors, from home insulation and clean transport to parks and river regeneration projects.

As cities continue to create green job opportunities, this analysis provides a benchmark for future efforts in the green economy.
