In a significant step toward addressing global water challenges, ICLEI and the World Water Council (WWC) have formalized a partnership to enhance sustainable water management, security, and governance. The collaboration was solidified through a memorandum of understanding signed on 9 January 2025, promoting multilevel governance, equitable access to water and sanitation, and resilience against climate-related water risks.
WWC, a multi-stakeholder organization representing 260 member institutions across 52 countries, advocates for water as a global political priority. ICLEI, known for supporting local and regional governments, will work with WWC to integrate water security into urban sustainability efforts and facilitate cooperation between governments and NGOs.
By aligning their expertise, the two organizations seek to empower local governments, foster knowledge exchange, and contribute to the achievement of SDG 6 to ensure water and sanitation access for all, and shape a more sustainable and water-secure future.
