Cities across the Global South are spearheading innovative, community-driven solutions to tackle urgent urban problems such as sanitation, waste management, water access, and youth employment.
This session, organized by UNDP SDG Local Action, will officially launch two new city guidelines:
- “Innovative solutions for sanitation and employment: the experience of Kumasi, Ghana” – documenting how the city addressed significant sanitation gaps through an interest-free loan scheme, a revolving fund, and youth training for biodigester toilets. The initiative decreased open defecation by 19%, provided safe facilities for over 3,000 residents, and created new livelihood opportunities for young artisans.
- “Innovating on waste management and water harvesting in cities: the case of Kigali, Rwanda” – showcasing how circular and tech-enabled approaches such as rainwater harvesting reservoirs, smart waste collection stations, and community maintenance committees improved hygiene, reduced water bills, and empowered residents in upgraded informal settlements.
