MADRID TANDEM PROJECT CREATES GREEN JOBS

The TANDEM project, part of the C40 Cities’ VISIBLE initiative and funded by the EU Next Generation Programme, is helping underrepresented groups in Madrid find good jobs in the green construction sector. It provides training and job opportunities to migrants, unemployed youth, and women through a partnership between Madrid’s green employment platform, ECODES, Universidad Politécnica de Madrid (UPM), and the City of Madrid.

The TándEM project offers training in building retrofits and renewable energy installation, and includes three months of instruction followed by nine months of paid internships, where participants work on projects like renovating schools, community centers, and senior centers.

These upgrades include installing solar panels, improving insulation, and using energy-efficient materials. After completing the program, participants receive a certificate as “Sustainable Renovation Technicians” and job coaching to help them transition into the workforce.

Two participants, Wahida and Noemi, shared about the skills they have learned to pursue careers in the construction industry:

Wahida Hakimi

“I’m originally from Afghanistan and moved to Spain about 15 months ago. I’ve been doing this course for about six months. I’ve been learning about façade renovation, vertical gardens (green walls) and solar panels. We’ll finish the practical course in April next year.”

Noemi Vargas

“Like Wahida, I started this course in April and have been learning alongside her and the cohort for six months now.”

The VISIBLE initiative supports European cities in leading inclusive change in their construction sectors. Through research, dialogues and pilot projects, the cities can make the case for a transition that benefits workers, businesses and communities, leaving no one behind. VISIBLE is supported by Laudes Foundation.
