MOMBASA STRENGTHENS CLIMATE RESILIENCE WITH LOCALLY-DRIVEN FLOOD MANAGEMENT STRATEGY

Mombasa, in Kenya, is addressing its long-standing urban flooding issues thanks to the adoption of a Flood Management Strategy. The plan was announced on March 2025 and it has been developed under the Mombasa City Lab, a collaborative platform for experts, government agencies, and local communities to co-create sustainable solutions to urban flooding, a persistent challenge for the city and co-hosted by the County Government of Mombasa (CGM) and the Covenant of Mayors in Sub-Saharan Africa (CoM SSA), with support from Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ), the Kenya Marine and Fisheries Research Institute (KMFRI), and MDF Training and Consultancy.

Key activities of the City Lab includes a flood risk and vulnerability assessment, which provided critical insights into the scale and root causes of urban flooding. This data-driven analysis highlighted key vulnerabilities, guiding the development of the Flood Management Strategy.

Abel Omanga, Technical Advisor for CoM SSA at GIZ, commended Mombasa’s leadership in climate action, emphasizing the city’s strong commitment to climate resilience.

Francis Thoya, Deputy Governor of Mombasa, emphasized that the Flood Management Strategy is a result of this collaborative effort and called on partners to support its implementation, with the goal of making Mombasa a more resilient city.

The Flood Management Strategy outlines a comprehensive portfolio of measures designed to reduce flood risks and enhance Mombasa’s resilience to climate-related hazards.
