GREEN ECONOMY ACTION PLAN IN NEW YORK CITY

New York City (NYC) Council, in collaboration with NYCEDC and NYC Talent, launched its Green Economy Action Plan in February 2024. This initiative will invest in jobs and sectors that help the city combat climate change, with projections of 400,000 jobs in the green economy by 2040 — up from 133,000 today.

The Green Economy Action Plan includes:

  • The establishment of a Climate Innovation Hub at the Brooklyn Army Terminal to support climate tech startups and businesses, create jobs and provide job placement;
  • The development of workforce training facilities in every city borough to offer over 12,000 apprenticeships by 2040;
  • The creation of a green economy ecosystem across New York Harbor (bay area), linked by NYC Ferry and occupying 6 million square feet to focus on climate education, research, innovation, commercialization, and workforce training;
  • The activation of public sites for electric vehicle charging, including the largest facility near JFK airport;
  • The creation of tax incentives to activate 500 megawatts of battery storage capacity to strengthen the renewable energy sector.

“Our city didn’t recover the nearly 1 million jobs we lost during the pandemic and reach a new private-sector job high by looking backward — we did it by building an economy of the future. And we must draw on all our resources to protect our city from the effects of climate change”, said NYC’s Mayor Eric Adams.

The Green Economy Action Plan also identifies key occupations that are essential to growing the green economy and highlights 21 occupations that provide pathways to economic mobility, many of which do not require higher education degrees.

As New York City takes this ambitious step forward, the Green Economy Action Plan is expected to generate $55 billion in economic impact and reinforce the city’s role in combating climate change, while creating new opportunities for its residents.
