Every year, 1.19 million people die in road accidents, and millions more suffer injuries. Traffic congestion, reckless driving, and poor infrastructure contribute to the crisis, disproportionately affecting pedestrians, cyclists, and motorcyclists. The economic and social costs of traffic accidents are particularly high in low- and middle-income countries, which account for 3% to 5% of GDP losses.

Cities worldwide are tackling these challenges through measures such as lowering speed limits, better urban design, and expanded public transport. Smart technology also plays a crucial role—real-time traffic monitoring, smart signals, and automated enforcement systems are proving effective in improving urban mobility and road safety.

The upcoming webinar will highlight practical solutions from two local governments:

  • Istanbul, Türkiye, has leveraged intelligent transportation systems and data-driven traffic management to enhance urban mobility and reduce accidents.

  • Buenos Aires, Argentina, has implemented the Third Road Safety Plan (2024-2027), focusing on speed reduction, stricter enforcement, and the use of AI-driven accident analysis.
