The Durable Qaddura project

is a community-led initiative launched by the City of Ramallah in 2023 to improve living conditions in Qaddura, an unrecognized refugee camp home to around 2000 residents, including 1,589 children and caregivers. The municipality, supported by the Mayor’s Migration Council’s Global Cities Fund for Refugees, worked directly with residents to address key needs. The project focused on three main interventions: strengthening solid waste management (including 134 containers and 1 collection vehicle), rehabilitating the camp’s neglected public park, and raising environmental awareness through community-led campaigns. Children and caregivers played a central role in shaping and implementing the improvements, from safer play areas to expanded park access. The initiative promoted inclusive, sustainable urban development and localized the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), especially those related to health, environment, and community engagement. It now serves as a model for refugee-responsive city planning.
