Sejong City in South Korea emerges as a hub for innovation

The Sejong Centre for Creative Economy and Innovation, founded in June 2015, has established the city as a dynamic epicentre for entrepreneurship. This facility guides startups through every stage — from brainstorming to global expansion – and offers several incubation spaces:

  • Sejong Startup Building: supports idea-based startups in their early days.
  • Sejong SB Plaza: the flagship facility focused on technology and venture-driven startups.
  • Sejong Startup Centre: a nurturing environment for young and early-stage entrepreneurs to turn their ideas into reality.
  • Sejong Licon Town and Administrative Complex Space: dedicated spaces for small businesses and local entrepreneurs to thrive and grow.

These contribute to SDG targets 9.3 and 9.5 which seek to widen the ratio of small and medium enterprises with access to financial services and markets, and to enhance research and upgrade industrial technologies.

The Centre also runs a programme called ‘StartOn’ Union, with stages including: fostering prospective entrepreneurs (Union) → incubating startup businesses (ChallengeOn) → advancing technology and validating the market (InsightOn) → facilitating open innovation with large and medium-sized enterprises (BridgeOn) → enhancing investment capabilities and providing direct investment (InvestOn) → and networking for Sejong City entrepreneurs (SynergyOn).

Driving innovation together

One of the unique features of the Sejong Centre is its emphasis on collaboration between startups and established companies, aligning with SDG target 17.17 – increase in the number of public and private organizations working together to support SDG implementation and realization. The Centre offers specialised services that include:

  • Technology verification support, helping large and medium-sized enterprises test and validate problem-solving technologies developed by startups.
  • Proposal-based technology verification, assisting startups with innovative solutions in verifying their technologies in real-world scenarios.
