The STMA WASH Registry

PROJECT DESCRIPTION

Sekondi-Takoradi’s informal settlements grew faster than its water and sanitation systems. Many households had no documented access to safe water, and schools and health centres often lacked a reliable supply, forcing health workers to buy water from private vendors to maintain basic hygiene and infection control. Without settlement-level data, support kept missing the people who needed it most. The Sekondi-Takoradi Metropolitan Assembly (STMA) responded by building a public, geo-referenced WASH (water, sanitation and hygiene) registry that maps household, communal and institutional facilities, showing who has access, who does not and where facilities have stopped working. The data now guides investment: it directed new mechanized boreholes to three health centres and targets new household toilets to the most vulnerable residents in underserved settlements. Built into city planning and budgeting since 2024, the registry has made water and sanitation access a permanent, measurable part of how the city governs.
