Singapore's transport policies

PROJECT DESCRIPTION

Singapore’s approach to land transport is shaped by a fundamental constraint: how to meet the mobility needs of a growing and evolving city of over six million people within limited land and environmental resources. With roads already occupying about 12% of the country’s land, Singapore cannot rely on continually expanding road capacity to meet future travel demand. Instead, mass public transport forms the core of its transport strategy, complemented by walking, cycling and shared transport, while private vehicle ownership and usage are actively managed. Over time, the focus has also broadened beyond moving people efficiently to improving the overall travel experience – making journeys more accessible and inclusive, supporting healthier and safer travel, and reducing the environmental footprint of transport. Long-term planning, integrated land use and transport development, sustained investment in public transport, and the adoption of new technologies underpin this approach as Singapore continues to adapt its transport system to changing needs.
