WEBINAR “Targeting urban heat: the experiences of Miami-Dade and Seville”

Join us for an insightful webinar on 10 October 2024 at 9:00 AM (New York time), focused on addressing the challenges of urban heat. As cities face increasing temperatures due to climate change, this event will explore solutions implemented by two local governments to mitigate the effects of extreme heat and protect vulnerable communities: Miami-Dade County, United States, and Seville City Council, Spain.

The Miami-Dade County experience stands as a pioneering effort in urban heat resilience. In 2021, the county established the world’s first Chief Heat Officer (CHO) to coordinate efforts in mitigating heat impacts. Key initiatives include tree planting, installing cool roofs, and retrofitting homes to reduce energy consumption. The county’s efforts also extend to protecting outdoor workers with enhanced heat safety protocols during high-temperature days.

The City Council of Seville, Spain, has made significant strides in combating urban heat. Known for its intense summer heat, Seville implemented a policy of shade by installing citywide awnings, planting trees, and utilizing heat-reflective materials. The city is also involved in the ProMETEO project, which names heatwaves posing severe health risks to raise public awareness and improve response efforts.

This webinar will explore the measures taken by both cities to offer valuable insights for other municipalities facing similar challenges.
