Background

The Inclusive Urban Recovery in Ukraine series is organised under the UN4UkrainianCities project. In the context of Ukraine’s recovery and the increasing role of cities as places of refuge and opportunities for Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs), this webinar will examine how Ukraine’s urban recovery can support durable solutions for IDPs, aligning with international frameworks such as the UN Guiding Principles on Internal Displacement, the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, and the principle of “Leave No One Behind.”

The objectives of this webinar are:

  • Raise awareness about how displacement affects urban environments, paying special attention to the different needs of IDPs.

  • Promote the inclusion of IDPs’ rights and perspectives in urban planning and recovery efforts.

  • Highlight effective practices and tools for inclusive urban solutions to internal displacement in Ukraine and around the world.

Programme

This webinar will feature:

  • Opening remarks from UNECE and GIZ on displacement, related challenges, and opportunities.

  • Insights from IOM Ukraine and UNHCR Ukraine on IDP-specific vulnerabilities in urban settings, inclusivity, housing, and participatory approaches to include displaced communities in planning.

  • A focus on city policies, design, and governance models that support IDP reception, integration, and long-term inclusion.

  • A panel with Ukrainian urban planners, NGO professionals, and local and national representatives discusses infrastructure, mobility, and safety challenges, along with opportunities to establish long-term inclusivity and safety.
