Composting as a Livelihood for Women
PROJECT DESCRIPTION
In Usulután Norte, the municipality was able to transform an environmental challenge into an economic opportunity for women by training 200 women in processing organic waste. The project collected garbage from five local markets as well as the coffeee pulp from all the city’s region, employing women to transform the residue into compost and sell the produce to be used by plant and fruit growing facilities across Eastern El Salvador. Developed with technical support from FAO, the initiative established a partnership between the municipality, private coffee mills and women groups. It tackles two problems at once: addressing the pollution generated by poorly managed organic waste and the high cost of sending waste to the local landfills. At the same time, it gives women living in extreme poverty economic independence and visibility, reflecting the municipality’s commitment to gender equality and environmental action.
