Webinar: how cities are improving the lives of their fishing communities

Join us in our next UNDP SDG Local Solutions Series webinar, exploring how local governments are creating better livelihoods for their fishing communities.

With over 60 million people globally dependent on commercial fishing, the growing threats of climate change and environmental degradation are putting these vital local economies and cultures at risk. Cities in coastal areas are paying attention to the needs of their fishing communities and acting to protect them.

Our webinar, “How cities are improving the lives of their fishing communities,” will explore how local governments are taking action!

Beira in Mozambique is implementing the Praia Resilience Project to relocate families of fishermen from informal settlement areas. The project provides these families with the means to improve their livelihoods, including access to plots to grow food, basic infrastructure and a cold storage system to support commercial fishing. Beira is one of the winners of the 2025 Mayors Challenge.

Sanniang Bay in China is conducting a pilot project to conserve and sustainably develop fishing communities. The initiative includes a survey of local livelihood needs, training in fishery and community waste management and recovery, the establishment of an ecological offshore aquaculture demonstration site, and the development of a fishing eco-tourism guidebook.
